Glimmers by Ruth Fones

Ruth is an artist and community arts teacher based in Wakefield.

From her studio in Ossett, she paints and sells original art and prints. She uses vivid colours and alternative mark making techniques.

Ruth has worked on creative projects with adult community groups including blind and visually impaired people, disabled adults, and refugee women.

Ruth has explored sight loss and nuances in vision through her previous solo exhibitions. She continues this research through an Arts Council England supported project, where Ruth is exploring large scale murals and textured plaster artworks which can be touched.

Glimmers

Glimmers is a collection of colourful semi-abstract landscapes. Ruth has been inspired by her walks where she lives in Ossett and nearby Wakefield and Huddersfield.

Ruth creates an elevated or exaggerated depiction of the view by playing with perspective and colours. She uses brighter and playful colours to transform the everyday tones of the landscapes.

Painting on wooden panel board or canvas she uses acrylic paints. She uses some unusual tools to paint with, such as credit cards and baking tools to create unexpected lines and marks.

Each painting starts with a golden base layer of paint. These flashes of gold remain in the final layers, creating ‘glimmers’ of light.
